6937 Vanland: Hollywood Castle’s Fairytale History

This storybook castle in the Hollywood Hills has its very own fairytale: Often associated with Roland E. Hill, the architect of Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle, 6937 Vanland Trail is actually from the imagination of its original owner, Kelsey Wellington Cook.

The actor-turned-LAPD deputy built his young family’s dream home around 1936, in between the births of his sons Clive Wayne and Christopher Robin (perhaps named after Winnie the Pooh’s best friend?).

Down a brick stairway from Pacific View Drive, a world of enchantment awaits: hand-carved wood, stained glass, leaded windows, a turret, steeply pitched roof, cobblestones, plus a waterfall and miniature bridge in the yard. A gargoyle watches over the second bedroom, which can be accessed by crossing a gangway and entering a bright green door adorned with the silhouette of a swashbuckler.

In 1939, Cook added the castle’s 15-foot turret, which conceals a spiral staircase from the living room down to the kitchen.

Another fairytale about 6937 Vanland Trail (originally Vine Trail) is that its kitchen inspired Snow White’s in the animated film. But the truth is they look nothing alike—not to mention, the Disney classic premiered in 1937, a year before the home’s supposed 1938 construction (according to public records; Cook was connected to the property in June 1936).

For two decades, Cook ascended the ranks of the LAPD, and in 1949 he was one of three detectives chosen to surveil Mickey Cohen, working in tandem with an undercover officer acting as the mobster’s bodyguard. That fall, Cook nabbed Cohen’s right-hand man Johnny Stompanato for loitering at 1 a.m. with fellow gangsters on the Sunset Strip—a violation of Sheriff Eugene W. Biscailuz’s campaign against the LA Underworld.

Cook and his wife Mabel, who also built 6933 Vanland, were the king and queen of their castle until the late 1950s, when they abdicated for Palm Springs.

The home is currently seeking new royalty: 6937 Vanland is on the market for $1.249 million.
